When Gayle Brier-Billebault first approached her husband with the idea of purchasing the little purple house on Falls Road to open a bakery, she insisted it would be nothing more than a side gig. She would only open it for holidays and special occasions, nothing more. Now two decades later, Bonjour French Bakery and Cafe is open for business every day of the week, and the couple has no regrets.
Every morning, they dole out flaky almond croissants, nut-studded Morning Glory bread, and cinnamon buns glazed with fondant. For lunch, Gayle and Gerard offer up a selection of deep-dish quiches, croissants stuffed with ham and cheese, and pissaladierre, which is a type of flatbread topped with herbs and olive oil, olives, Swiss cheese, and either tomatoes or artichoke hearts. For dessert, savor a French apple tart, a couple of light and airy macarons, or a slice of strawberry shortcake.
